Cardinal Napier Soccer world cup 2010Ke Nako! It is time! Let’s get on with it!

South Africa is a nation in transformation. The FIFA World Cup has given our country a wonderful opportunity to work together and to prove that we are a nation full of very capable people. I congratulate the government, the Local Organising Committee, the volunteers, builders, workers and everyone involved in making this a very successful event.

No longer do we stage ‘World class’ events – the world has to try to stage ‘South African’ class events. I want to commend in particular the South African Police Service, the joint working committees, the emergency services and all who did so much to keep all in our country safe.

South Africa has shown the capacity to work, to build, to co-ordinate, to manage and to protect. We must use our considerable skill and learning to tackle the most pressing issues in our country – education, healthcare, criminality and service delivery. It’s time – and we have proven that we can do it!

Soccer World Cup prayer

Almighty God,
creator of all, as people from
every nation gather with excitement
and enthusiasm for the 2010 World Soccer
Cup may South Africans be good hosts, our
visitors welcomed guests and the players from
every team be blessed with good sportsmanship
and health. May your Spirit of fairness, justice and
peace prevail amongst players and all involved. May
each contribute in his own positive ways to prevent,
control and fight crime and corruption, hooliganism of
any kind and exploitation and abuse, especially of
those most vulnerable. May those far away from
home and those in their families find much joy
in this occasion to celebrate the beautiful
game of soccer and the beautiful
game of life according to Your
plan for the common good
of all. Amen
