From the Pope...

“May the game of soccer always be more of a means of teaching the values of honesty, solidarity and fraternity, especially among the younger generations.”

A colourful World Cup Sunday!
14 June 2010

The South African Catholics Bishops Conference have declared Sunday, 13th June 2010 World Cup Sunday, and a prayer day for our team, Bafana Bafana and the success in hosting the most prestigious event in the sporting world. Lot of Catholic churches played the game, with colourful services, as you can see on the photos below. If you wish to share this moment on the website, please send your best pictures to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it !

World Cup Sunday celebration at Holy Spirit Parish, Arcadia

We started the celebration with Father blowing the vuvuzela and not ringing the bell as normal. Then we sang the national anthem (still do) after the opening hymn. We used the prayers of the faithful that I copied from the website and Father's homily was about fair play in society and us being OUTSTANDING HOSTS NO MATTER HOW WE FARE IN THE TOURNAMENT. He explained to all what Jabulani means. We still dress in our soccer gear every week to mass. Father took some of the booklets to St. Albans Prison where he works on the parole board. We are ending the final off with a bang again on Sunday. This world cup has truly been an experience!

Thank you once again for the booklets as they really are an inspiration to all who read it. We take a prayer or two each week and put it in the newsletter as well as the world cup prayer which really touches so many people.

Thank you for the wonderful website as our parish would never have had the privilege to actually go to such extremes to make the Sunday so special if it was not for the wealth of information we picked up through the website.

St Kevin's parish in Port Elisabeth

It was a heart rendering Mass, with a few lucky draws of prizes we received from our Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Tourism and Coca Cola. And some people joined after Mass to the Waka Waka, and Waving the flag music outside church. Thank you so much for the opportunity to put our churches on the world map!

Ahanang Parish based care Organisation (Sedibeng District, Gauteng)

Ahanang renders home based care services to chronically ill patients including HIV/AIDS and TB. They also care for orphans and vulnerable children. On the pictures, you can see the Ahanang care givers during the celebration of the World Cup on the 10th June 2010 at their centre.

Soshanguve parishes

In Soshanguve we intended making this event more interesting and memorable. The eight Catholic Churches in Soshanguve met to pray and play together. The invitation was extended to members of other denominations and faith communities and to the Soshanguve/Mabopane communities. The service was held at the Soshanguve Mini Stadium and we had a soccer tournament after Mass.
